National Trust Bateman’s

Rudyard Kipling is one of the best-known writers of the late 19th and 20th century. He fell in love with Bateman’s at first sight, we hope you will too.

This 17th - century house provided a much needed sanctuary for Rudyard and his family and remains ‘untouched and unfaked’ much as he left them.

Bateman’s is very much a family home and as you wander around it feels as if the family have just gone out for the day.

See the study where he wrote many of his famous works including ‘Puck of Pook’s Hill’ and ‘Rewards and Fairies’.

The charming quintessentially English gardens including an orchard, pond and wild garden can be enjoyed all year round. A working watermill sits at the bottom of the wild garden on the river Dudwell. From here you can head out on one of the three easy to follow estate walks to tread in Kipling’s footsteps and see the landscape which so inspired him.

Of course no visit would be complete without a reviving cup of tea and slice of cake from the Mulberry tea-room. You can also enjoy browsing the Scullery second-hand bookshop and the Oast gift shop for that perfect souvenir of your visit.

Finally the natural play area in a secluded glen adjacent to the car park is perfect for our younger visitors.
