Cement Fields

England’s Creative Coast is full of creative happenings and in North Kent, along the Thames Estuary from Dartford to Whitstable, you can experience outstanding new time-specific art through festivals and events brought together by the arts organisation Cement Fields.

Well-known for Whitstable Biennale, which takes places in this quaint seaside town famous for its oysters every two years, Cement Fields supports early-career artists to develop ambitious, risk-taking new art, and supports children & young people to develop imagination, skills, and routes into creative careers.

Next year, the organisation is working with Metal to create Estuary 2020, a festival celebrating 60 miles of coastline between South Essex and North Kent with art, music, literature and film – definitely one for your cultural calendar.

Current Cement Fields projects include an artist residency with Dipesh Pandya, who is researching and making links between Gravesend and Kochi, Amritsar, and New Delhi in India, and a series of artists’ walks devised by Adam Chodzko and led by Turner Prize winner Mike Nelson, Janice Kerbel and Ruth Ewan that explore North Kent landscapes.

In 2020...

As part of The Waterfronts series Cement Fields are creating a new artwork with London-based artist Jasleen Kaur. Brought up in a traditional Sikh household in Glasgow, Kaur’s work reconsiders the realities of materiality, usage and everyday routine within the everyday things that surround us. Her refashioned objects are based on instinct and resourcefulness. Kaur’s new work will be a response to the connections between the diverse communities in Gravesend.
