Title: The Scroll

The Makers
The Scroll is a mixed media textile artwork created by artist Janey Moffatt with the help of school children from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Hastings Old Town and co-facilitator Anna Atkinson. The children named themselves ‘The Sneaky Sketchers’ as the project was all about hiding and finding artwork in the great outdoors. "Living by the sea means a seagull stealing my ice cream on a hot, sunny day!"

The Process
Sessions were held at Hastings Contemporary in 2019. Children explored the local fishing beach, collecting found objects and leaving decorated stones for strangers to find among the shingle. Hastings is one of the medieval Cinque Ports and has the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe. We call the beach here the Stade which is a Saxon term meaning landing place.

Inspiration
The idea for the cache came from the tiny paper log book scrolls that are often found in small Geocaches. We used a variety of printing processes to create the work, including Cyanotype, heat transfer, rust printing and lino cut.
